Disability Equality Duty
Disability Equality Duty (DED) became effective on 6th December, 2006. The new law requires public sector organisations (including hospitals, Councils, police and schools) to be proactive in ensuring that disabled people are treated fairly. This involves promoting equality of opportunity, eliminating unlawful discrimination and harassment, promoting positive attitudes and encouraging participation by disabled people in public life.
Public Authorities must publish a Disability Equality Scheme and Action Plan, prepared with the involvement and input of disabled people. The Scheme and Action Plan must be reviewed and assessed for effectiveness and an annual report issued on progress achieved.
People with disabilities can take part in ensuring that authorities comply with the requirements of DED, in providing services to disabled persons. Aberdeen Action on Disability welcomes enquiries from people interested in reporting their experiences of public services. Please use the main contact details.
